today is the 51st anniversary of the day the music died

On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, killed three American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. The day was later called The Day the Music Died by Don McLean, in his song "American Pie".

Hey man,

Cheers for that. Really appreciate that. Will get on to all them ASAP.

I suggest you add the social bookmarking widget to your site on each page

On the bottom of the page, there is a share button on the toolbar. You can instantly share anything on Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon.. You can share it on absolutely everything!

I suggest you create more room on your site for targeted advertisements such as google adsense or adbrites adverts.

Part of our policiy is that we wont use adwords or anything. We will only let companies who have a real interest and can benefit the Irish Music Industry. The site is not here to make money, the advertising is just to cover costs.

Create a facebook page if you dont have one already and get your mates to join

Again on the toolbar there is a Facebook Fan Page link, and you can become a fan without ever leaving Harmonix.ie. There are nearly 200 fans at the moment, and any post on the forum gets sent straight to Twitter and that fan page where it appears on everyone's wall.

Facebook Adverts

Something that will certainly be done in the next few months.

Im now going to go drop dead from exhaustion for a few minutes

You really are a star for giving up all that time! There are quite a lot of things there that I will certainly have a shot at.

Would you become a fan of the Facebook page and click Suggest to Friends for me? http://www.facebook.com/pages/Harmonixie/252606963290?ref=ts

That seems like the best possible promotion, as it appears on everybody's walls. Having said that, there were 2,000 suggestions made to people, and there are now only 200 fans!!

i know what you mean mate.

if you really to get this popping there are a few things you can do but its going to be tough going for a while and may become costly.

i've noticed your running adverts such as "http://www.iteurope.ie/"'s - and i presume this is either a friend or your on a commission basis (ie for every signup you receive a % of the profits)

does your site actually generate any profits what so ever?

Options to generate profits and advertise your site - some are free, some cost:

Social Bookmarking - I suggest you add the social bookmarking widget to your site on each page (in every part of your forums if you are able to) If someone finds a cool post they can immediately post it to example stumble, digg, facebook etc - i've done this on a few of my sites and when looking through my google analytics you can most defintly see a spike in your traffic. at that moment when your spike is there if you have great content you will get visitors staying. the link is here http://www.addthis.com/ - EDIT: i've seen you have this already - ill leave this text up for others, no point deleting it now - perhaps adding large add this icons could help now, like a large add to twitter, stumble etc - more dynamic

Targeted Relevant Adverts: I suggest you create more room on your site for targeted advertisements such as google adsense or adbrites adverts. these will show the user adverts more in context with the text displayed on the screen that they are reading. they generally pay per impression and per click

Facebook: - Create a facebook page if you dont have one already and get your mates to join, this will allow for 2 options - 1: it is an easy way to get in contact with your members & 2: it itself is a free advertisement when the link is seen on peoples pages

Facebook Adverts: I personally do click the facebook adverts - sometimes there is something good in there to check out - i heard they can be pretty cheap and you can target them either to specific locations or globally - target yours towards the irish community

Conduit Toolbar - This is a simple to build toolbar relevant on whatever you want (ie your site) you get paid per usage and per download of this. I strongly recommend you make one BUT do not sign up yet. Wait until you have a few thousand members, do a mass email and request that you need "BETA TESTERS" for your toolbar. You have i think 30 days to make money on it until they put the price per download down to around 1 or 2 cent. so dont make one until you have a large enough community, otherwise you wont pull in any revenue - link here http://www.conduit.com/

Dont spam other sites - just spam your signature on other sites and stay active - in time your link will become so tempting to others they will click it and if they like that they see your made

Local Freebies I dont know about other areas but in celbridge there are a few magazines and crap full of free adverts - you could add yourself to this, try tapping into local newspapers too, adverts can be cheap and these papers can be read by up to 50 or 60,000 people a week

Get in with others: Find other small sites and offer to advertise them free if they advertise you free - you never know, if they suddenly become big you could have a sudden mass of 100,000 members one day! Stay in with people and other sites, get to know the admins and ask for tips etc

Physically doing something:

Pending on your location (example if your from dublin) target the surrounding colleges and musical stores. print off business cards with your websites details on it and what you do, go to example my college (balleyfermot rock school) and leave a bunch lying around - i seen this go on for 2 years when i was in there. you can tap into a serious amount of people by doing this. its painful slow work but it can potentially work. you have balleyfermot college, DIT, TIT, Maynooth College and so many more. Do the same to music stores such as walons, perfect pitch etc - get posters up

A mass sticker sticking street team can work in favor of you but it can also lead to a fine. So long as your stickers are not littering areas or you are seen as destroying public property you'll be safe. I suggest tapping into the "emo" area of dublin at central bank at the weekends and handing out cards, flyers etc, do the same to the hotspots such as temple bar, asha shop, tambuli (i think thats how you spell it) etc - general place where large communities hang out - in that case the rocker / emo community

Finally make sure you get google analytics up in your source code on your site. I had a quick look through your code and i couldn't see it, maybe i missed it on this page - theres a lot of code in there :P

Looking at the top of your site there is a large potential area for secondary content such as adverts - i suggest you check out the tuts sites for good tips etc on building more "web2.0" looking sites - these are a great way to show the general trend of the websites being built today and whats working for people http://tutsplus.com/ - also dont be afraid of using .png's - they can always make a site look more dynamic when the standard jpeg images which cant generate a transparent background

Hope that can help you out some bit

Im now going to go drop dead from exhaustion for a few minutes :-D

Yeah stickers may be a good option! The "robbing" from boards is harder than you think... I got banned for just putting a link up there!!

It's very strange, people are registering, but just not posting. And there is an average of 95 visitors per day! I'm sure that once there are a few more very active members it will grow and grow, but its a hard slog to get past that point!

I will go pop a link onto Gigsmart now!

what i feel is you really need to pull the community from gigsmart and boards.ie

gigsmart had its moments a few years back but after there site rebuild people got pretty pissed off. if you can find that community again your in business. also you need to pull the boards.ie community of musicians and get them on board in here.

other then that... print some stickers, hand them out to members and tell them to slap them up all over the country :-D

Ok i had this crazy idea of posting quiz-like questions and see who knows their stuff... post any questions you can think of

A few rules to start off with though...
.you can't use google or any other search engine
.any questions you might like to post have to be music related

Well in exactly an hour, it jumped from £1 to £510!!!

The only problem is it doesn't show up in a search of ebay.ie. I told Mark to include Ireland in "ships to". That would also give a € price for us Irish viewers!! Not too sure if he can change the auction once it has started though.

This should be a good one. People bid on the eBay item, and the highest bidder gets Glen Hansard and Mark Geary in to their gaff to play a gig! All proceeds go towards Heiti.

Great cause, and would be an amazing gig.

Get bidding! Heres the link:

If anyone's down around the Bantry area next weekend we're playing at a lovely venue called Carbery Cottage outside Durrus, Co. Cork It sounds really nice. They do dinner and music afterwards. We're the music - Mary Greene and Noel Shine and our special guest on the night will be the next generation, Ellie Shine...shithot ukelele player and a SERIOUSLY good singer. It will be cosy and if you want to stay the night, the guys run a b&b too.

Really enjoyed being iced in. Stuffed full of food...had to be really creative with whatever food happened to be in the cupboard. I enjoyed a bevvy or two and eventually started on the trifle sherry. Watched LOADS of the original star trek series...SERIOUS class and great fun. Even started looking at half finished songs. sigh. It was hard going back into the real world again. Now I'm a bit depressed!

I suppose, at least Joe McElderry can sing but again he's one of those 'big' singers that they always seem to go for. If you think of some of the best-loved singers down the years, willie nelson, bob dylan, neil young, emmylou harris, darach o cathain the connemara sean nos singer, even someone like florence and the machine would be turned down. Those shows have a diva/divo template and if you don't fit, don't bother.

Should only take an hour to read the entire book. How long do you think a project like this would take overall in the studio and how much would it cost?

I know it has nothing to do with music, but this should be fun! Since we added thousands of flash games to the toolbar at the bottom of this page, we would like to hear your favourites! Which ones are good so we can all search for them and have a go?

If we get a few good responses we will have a small competition of high scores!

To set up a private tournament, simply send an e-mail to privatetournaments@fulltiltpoker.com with all of the following information regarding the tournament you want set up:

Tournament Name:

Tournament Date:

Tournament Time:

Game to be Played:

Buy-In and Entry Fee:

Password:

Expected Turnout:

That's everything, but here are a few other things to be sure to watch for:

The tournament's name can not exceed 25 characters.

The time you choose is clear (If you want a tournament at 4 PM, don't just write 4:00, write 16:00 SERVER TIME). All unlabeled time zones are interpreted as SERVER TIME, which is US ET.

The entry fee must be at least 10% of the buy-in.

The password must be all lower case letters without spaces.

If you want a tournament with something other than a nine player minimum, make that clear in your e-mail.

I can browse to the "Private" tournaments, but dont see an option for creating one. I remember with the old software it was very easy and obvious. We must be missing something silly....
